Screening of "Son Rise" with filmmaker Vibha Bakshi
Vibha Bakshi, the film’s director and producer, is scheduled to speak in person at the screening.
Son Rise is a documentary from the strongly patriarchal state of Haryana, bordering India's capital, New Delhi, where the dwindling female population has provoked unprecedented levels of sexual violence against women. Exploring these darkest corners, filmmaker Vibha Bakshi discovers that all is not lost: some men are rising to fight for women's justice and gender equality. Son Rise won the prestigious National Film Awards for Best Film (non-feature) and Best Editing (non-feature) awarded by the President of India.
Son Rise has been internationally recognized and was selected by the United Nations to be screened as part of UN Women’s global HeForShe campaign across 71 countries. The UN has organized another multi-country screening this year in honor of International Women’s Day.
Liu Institute faculty fellow Julia Kowalski, assistant professor of global affairs, will moderate the post-screening discussion.
